A friend told me the sad story of his father. The old man hated his job--long hours, lousy pay, and miserable work. He dreamed of visiting all the national parks, but it was impossible with his work situation. So he saved what little he could and planned to buy an RV upon retiring and live out his dreams in his golden years. He had a small retirement party with family and close friends, and on the drive home from the party he got in a car accident and died.
This song is my response to hearing that.
lyrics
Some folks measure their success by the labels in their suits
Some folks let their family ties choke them like a noose
But not me my friend, not me my friend, no no not me
We all got to die, and when it’s my time, I’m gonna die living
Give me wings and a guitar case
Show me, show me to the stage
Let me loose and I will play
I will
But hold me back or tie me down
Trap me under a golden crown
And watch me blow this nothing town
I will
I will die living
Some folks argue politics till it drives them mad
Some folks let their problems shine, wear them like a badge
But not me my friend, not me my friend, no no not me
We all got to die, and when it’s my time, I’m gonna die living
Put me on a jet airplane
Send me to a foreign place
And fall in love with a stranger’s face
I will
Show me something I ain’t seen
Take me somewhere I ain’t been
I got my music and my old six string
And I will
I will die living
